My Soul Purpose

A Life in Clay

“Livy, do you want to take a pottery workshop with Mrs. Anita?”

I was 8 years old, entering the summer before 3rd grade. My mom was giving me lots of chances to explore my creativity through summer craft camps and art classes. I remember thinking that pottery didn’t really sound all that fun compared to the other ideas I had for my summer.

I ended up agreeing to join the workshop and absolutely fell in love with clay. I returned weekly to Anita’s studio for years afterward and would have moved into the studio if she would have let me! I can’t thank my mom and Anita enough for seeing the creativity in me and nurturing it into a skill. Now, over two decades later, I’m still waking up excited to be in my own pottery studio and create. It’s a deep breath of fresh air, a peaceful moment, and a passion.

Throughout my career, I’ve studied with wonderful teachers like Anita Hughes , Paul McCoy , and Danielle McDaniels, each of whom have taught me unique aspects of the craft. I’ve worked for amazing places like Black Oak Art where we sold pieces for Magnolia Market. Those little Magnolia mugs from Waco, Tx have found homes all over the world (and still do to this day)!

Through the years, I’ve held onto the feeling of that first pottery class and how right it felt to have clay in my hands. It’s a feeling I’ll never let go of.

These days, you can find me in my Franklin, TN studio working on commissions and new pieces, or teaching others the joys of clay. Wherever I am, there is clay, and that’s how it will always be. 🤍
